Well here we are finally with the first of a few small fantasy dioramas that I have been promising for some time. As I have said previously, when I was given a set of the Amazons I thought what I am going to do with these young ladies?  I checked out the other Dark Alliance figures and thought, these are really great, I reckon I can do something with them. So with the excitement of a new idea, I went a bit silly and purchased a few sets that I’m going to use this season.

This first one, as you can see, is my use of the Amazon girls pitted against some Warriors of the Dead using a bit of terrain I have made out of Styrofoam, cardboard and good old plaster cloth. Going with the advice I received from the younger daughter, I have used some old bamboo roots from the garden and then I used two strange tree armatures I received in a set of Heki trees, and finally one of the wire trees that I learnt from Dave.  (Sorry Dave I made five but could only fit one on.)  I must say though, it is so worth the effort to make these as they are so versatile, I might even be able to use them in the swamp theme one I have planned.  The wall is made from bricks that I created by air-drying clay. This allowed me to make them to the size I wanted and were so easy to make.

The great thing about this size is quick to make.   The base probably took four hours to make all up as I used a hot glue gun to attach all the Styrofoam pieces so there was no drying time.

Well that’s pretty well it for now; I am looking forward to hearing the reaction I get on this new subject I’ve taken on.

    Brilliant Pat, love it all. The change of genre has worked out very well and I am certainly looking forward to seeing what else you have in store. I think what I liked most when I explored other themes was the complete freedom to do what you like. The bamboo roots look excellent and I love the rock, very realstic The wire tree looks great too and I am glad you enjoyed making it. The figures look superb but that is what I would have expected!

      Thanks Dave, it is the freedom from rules that make the fantasy stuff so exciting! your wire trees have received a lot of admiration in the household, I can see myself using a few of these in the future. The weathers come good so I’ve already been in the shed making up the base for the next one so it shouldn’t be long before I post the next one.

    As Dave said, brilliant! Even though it’s a “small” diorama by your standards, there’s plenty going on there. Like the layout and the action and, of course, the figures! I think the dark ground works well, both for the theme and the fact that the figures become more noticeable! All very nice! 🙂

    Fantastic looking diorama, from the use of the roots to make the vines, to the trees you made and the placement of all the figures, really help tell this story.

    Been looking forward to seeing this and I’m not disappointed! Fab! I think the change of genre has clearly been inspirational for you. So many little interesting aspects into this scene but works great as a whole too! The air-drying clay wall works great.

    There’s a few of these RedBox Amazon sets – which ones did you use, Pat? I do like their Amazon sets and I’ve been thinking about maybe doing something a little similar to you and branching out into different territory, even as a one-off, and this has given me inspiration.

      Thanks Marvin you are right it’s certainly uplifting being able to paint the figures any way you like, and the air-drying bricks were easy and you can make them the size you want .I only used the two unmounted Amazon sets 72025and 72020,although I have slipped in a mounted one as an experiment. Just a bit of advice, I prefer the modern set 72025 but they have quite a bit of flash on them which is a bugger whilst the 72020 have none. I would love to see how you approached these with your style of painting !

    Amazing! Did I just type that for the temple post? Well, so what if I did? This piece certainly deserves it. I’m also finding it much more moody and …brooding (for a battle). The dark environment and the cave certainly add to a very different atmosphere.

      Thanks mate, I was trying to get that dark feeling I wanted to go a more jungle effect but was told by the young and wilful that I had to stay with the duller look, so like a good father I did what I was told !!
