Today I finished this marvellous temple that I purchased in August 2019 and started painting to use on the Mummies diorama.  However I found it didn’t suit as the steps were not designed for the use of 1/72 scale figures so I put it aside. I did try it out on another but also gave that up as the plan failed to get off the ground.

When I had the original plan for this current one I was only going to have warships but then I spied it on the shelf and thought “come on use it!”  The young lad that sold it to me will be wondering where the hell it went! A Big thanks to him and the others down at the Warhammer shop in Ringwood, always helpful.

Well I unearthed it the other day as I was unpacking another carton and as I am waiting for the last figures to arrive I decided to paint it up.  Now I have been catching up on IRO’s pods and chanced to hear him talk about painting a model like the box image or do you paint it completely differently?   This got me thinking because I was painting it as the box image and realized this was because I am not really a fantasy person.  When I started out, never for a moment did I think I would go down that road, but having said that, I really don’t think mine is really true fantasy because as one of you good folk pointed out it’s a really a mix of history with a touch of fantasy

Anyway dabbling in it is more fun than my more traditional subjects as you can paint them how you want.  Then again, I have to say my Napoleonic guys aren’t really all that accurate!   I’m sure there is a lot of head shaking going on out there as they see my errors but I’m pretty lazy when it comes to research and when I do it generally leads to me into a dilemma like when I wanted to do the Battle of the Raisin River and got so confused I gave up!

Anyway enough waffle!  As you can see I painted it pretty much like the box artwork and to me it looks like it might be usable.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

For those like me that are not savvy with the world of fantasy the model is from Warhammer Age of Sigmar, Shattered Temple.

Just before I go I have to say that I don’t consider myself a class painter like a lot of you out there, I have just bumbled along.  I like to think I have improved a bit but I have to say it was not until our good friend IRO put me onto Washes from Citadel that things really started to improve, so thanks mate and keep up those Podcasts.  IRO is not the only one; I have picked up a lot of tricks from many of you so a big thanks you to you as well!   Cheers Boys and Girls, take care.

    Pat it has come up really well so don’t down sell yourself. With regards to painting we are all at various stage of the journey. Like you I consider myself OK (just) but very inconsistent with my painting quality. As a hobby, providing we are happy with what we are doing, that is all that matters. If it helps me “chill” and deal with the important things in life then I’m happy. Bloody tank kits! Grrrrh!!! Just kidding.

      Thanks Pig , I am pretty happy with consistency that’s fine with me as I have said before I can hide my mistakes in the crowd! My big problem is that when I batch paint and have to mix some paint I forget to note it down so the next batch may have a different tone 🤔😅😅

        yeah, that’s a problem for me as well. I’ve started to make-up paints for airbrushing into small glass jars with tight lids, and as soon as I think I’m done and wash the pot out, I find a small area that need touching up! Such is the way with this hobby!!

    I’m going to have to go back through some of your old posts Pat because I’m buggered if I could find anything wrong with the painting thefirst timeI looked! As for that temple that is a very cool kit indeed. Like you I never saw myself ever doing fantasy but I’m glad I embraced it. Always good for a bit of variety and an opportunity to use some paint colours which otherwise would sit there! 🙂

    Excellent work on the temple Pat, would work for so many applications. Fantasy is very much a twisted version of historical, if you read some of the Norse folklore you can see where Fantasy stems from, and ancient Egyption stories about the gods, and Aztec and Mayan, the list is endless. The most amazing one is nearly every culture has a legend about a Dragon, although they do vary in shape and size quite a bit, the Australian one, has a lot of characteristics of a Kangaroo !

    You’ve done a cracking job on that temple mate, I’ve been looking forward to seeing what you did with it for ages and you didn’t disappoint! I know what you mean about washes, they’re a fantastic invention aren’t they? I know I used to paint models before I discovered them but I’m dammed if I can remember how I did it now!

      Aah so it was you ! I thought it might be but as you said it’s been a long time coming 😅😅, Thanks mate I was surprised I got it done so quickly . Before the washes I tried a variety of way but they were terribly inconsistent and as I batch paint if I ran out and had to make up more it never quite turned out the same 🤨

    Beautifully painted temple Pat, and don’t sell yourself short, your work is damn amazing. The washes are a big help, as are pigments! All are just tools and now you’ll have the time to explore so much (though retirement does indeed get busy as I can attest!). Kudos!

      Thanks Mark, I was always complaining about my mates being busy even though they had retired and had seven days available 🧐now I know why so couldn’t pin them down for a catch up !! I have suddenly become the same 🤔🤣🤣

    I like it Pat, very clean lines! I’ll just echo what others have said about your work, it always amazes me what detail you can put into such small models!
    And I’ll echo your thoughts on time and practice making us better, yet even today I feel like I can and should do better! Looking forward to what comes next!

    Very nice temple. I particularly like the marble, which looks to my eye like the real thing. Are you planning on keeping it clean, like it is now, or making it look somewhat abandoned or ill-kept, maybe with some small, desert plants growing out the cracks in the marble and that sort of thing? (I think it looks great as is by the way.) I also like the background you placed the piece on.

      Thanks Ann , I think at the moment it’s going to be occupied by either some Ancient Greeks plus a few skeletons but I’m not sure 🤔 It’s funny the object it’s on is the up turned top of a Japanese granite temple that is composed of five parts , I had to rush to put it up before young Fi left us as it weighs a ton!!! Problem was I didn’t bury it deep enough and when we got some rain it tumbled over !😳

    That piece of Temple scenery is great for Egyptian themed minis. I wouldn’t made the connection until I saw this post but now I can’t imagine it any other way! One thing you can try on this piece or a future piece is lightly drybrushing any hard edges like the stairs, for example) with a lighter beige or bone color to show some edge wear where the light hits those places. Its a quick technique that is good for bigger pieces like this. Just a little food for thought if you want to take it to the next level 🙂 I can’t wait to see some minis on the temple now!

      Cheers mate 😃I’m ready for any good advice as my paint is generally ok but I do lack the finer details and what you say makes a lot of sense so I will give it a go , thanks mate 🤓

        You’re welcome and let us (okay, mostly me) know how it worked out for you 😀 Personally, I enjoy drybrushing because it is fast and easy and can deliver great results when used in the right circumstances!

    I know nothing about painting buildings but I’d pleased as punch to have it looking like this. The marbled stone effect is fab. Let me tell you, I would definitely worship there 🙂

      Thanks mate, it was quite easy really as I pretty much followed the box paint work, the marbled effect was probably due to my over eagerness with the Citadel was mix that I had made up !!
