Roman Warship

ROMAN WARSHIP

Well I have said I don’t like doing rigging before so some of you will think I have changed my mind when you see these photos.   No, I haven’t, it’s just that I must be a sucker for punishment!  I thought this one would be pretty simple but even the simple ones love to trip me up.  You wouldn’t believe it, but I still have two more ships to build down the track, a Greek Triera and a Crusaders ship, both by Zvezda.

Well I have managed to get this one done but those who know it will immediately notice a lot of changes – I’ll just go through them.  Firstly, the castle and the canvas awning tent had to go, then the side of the deck where the rowers could be seen was filled in by using strips of balsawood (mind you this was after painting a set of oarsmen from Orien … AHH! … let’s just say it was too much trouble as  they were hard to fit in.  Then I thought, bugger the oars, I’ll just pretend they have shipped them and are getting ready for action! So yeah a few changes but I feel it will suit the show and probably fit in better without the oars.  Lastly, the shields didn’t suit at all, very chunky … again I only thought of that after painting them!

The ship is one by Academy and the box title reads, B.C. Roman Warship.

Anyway it was simple to build and it wasn’t as hard to rig as the Pirate ship (now that one made me cry!)  My big problem and I’m sure some of you will share this fault is that after I master something I fail to make notes thinking ah! I’ll remember for next time!!  Nah, I have to work it all out again!!!!

I’m just waiting for some new release guys that look really grand and I feel they will fit in nicely, so until then it’s back to another small boat and some crew for this one.  Cheers all, keep safe.

Roman worship? That’s like… Zeus and Thor and struff, right? And that movie 300?

Jokes aside Pat – the ship looks fantastic! You’re a braver man than I am to do the rigging on any of these!

Exdellent Pat, really very nice indeed. I’m not sure what impresses me more, the frigging rigging which is awesome or that having just moved you’re already up and modelling! 😉 As always looking forward to seeing more of this one in due course. 🙂

Excellent work on the ship Pat, the rigging looks perfect, and all the changes you made are seamless, if you hadn’t mentioned it you couldn’t tell.
I think the fact you keep returning to ships, even though the rigging is a pain, you like to challenge yourself, as you do a damn fine job !

Thanks mate , yep all my ships are plastic, so much easier and a hell of a lot cheaper🤔it’s the rigging that’s a bother as some instruction are very vague,it pays to check out others who have posted pictures of theirs, certainly helped me and yep mate give it a go but start on a simple one first , personally I would stay away from Nelson’s Victory! 😳🤣🤣🤣

Thanks for the advice, but I must admit I do own 1 plastic boat kit that I started and have never finished and its this I thought about going back to when I saw your post.
But guess which ship it is … HMS Victory!

Ha Ha ! Love that mate😅well you have to get back to work and finish it !!😉l can’t wait for a rigging report. If it’s any consultation I started the wooden one in 1984😳. It has followed us in every move and when the wife spots it anywhere she just smiles and says “oh you still have that, oh well maybe someday!!!!”🤭😅😅

Very nice galley and neat that you are doing the rigging. I remember my dad doing the rigging on some sailing ships, when I was a child, and it was always one of those projects that took him a very long time to finish.

Wow Ann I’m not surprised! your dad must have had a lot of patience, it is so difficult, its only that i have small hands and fingers that allows me to manage it before anger sets in !!!Hat of to your dad, patience is one of the virtues I think some one said and your dad had it and it missed me bye the mile!!!

You know, when I was growing up I never really thought about him being particularly patient, but then I didn’t think he was impatient either.

Now that I’m a bit older (and hopefully wiser), looking back my father was a very patient man in general. Again I didn’t think about it then, being a child, but now I’m glad to remember that he got to snatch some time here and there doing wood projects, models, etc. etc. since otherwise he worked very hard.

That is pretty handy, having hands small enough to do little tasks more easily. My husband has a problem with having something along the order of Ham Hands, which makes it hard for him whenever he tries to crack open his computer and do stuff to it, modelling, and so on. He gets by but he has to do what you do – take breaks when he starts to become impatient. I don’t blame him. I’d probably get irritated too if I had ham hands. On the other hand, he’s pretty handy to have around when something is stuck. I do ok, if I say so myself, because of all of the hand and wrist work I do, but sometimes I ran across a problem that requires a pair of ham hands. 🙂

Ha Ha! I have a mate who was given a model car to build, when I asked him some months later why he hadn’t started it he said he had a go at it but found that it was to fiddly for his big hands!!

I can’t believe it’s not wood! In fact, I can’t believe it’s not canvas either. You are a talented ship builder. I’m casting my mind back to think if I have ever built a boat and I think probably not. So you can imagine what kind of naval disaster would ensue if I did.

Apologies for taking so long to check this out. No internet for weeks since the house move!
