Well my friends as I have mentioned after the last large diorama, I would be going small again for a while (when I say small I mean the size of the Swamp diorama). ย I have decided to do one with some Orcs, no plan has formulated in the tiny brain as yet but Iโm sure something will turn up. Until then I will just paint them up. ย I have started some that I picked out of three boxes so here they are. ย I know some of you would imagine I would paint them green but instead I have gone along a more Tolkien line from a movie I saw some time back. ย Cheers Pat.

Well I never had you down for Orcs Pat, that’s very different for you for sure. The figures themselves look great and I like the approach you have taken with the colour scheme. Will be most intrigued to see what you come up with for the setting but I’m guessing you have a few followers who will have a few ideas to pich in with. ๐

Thanks Dave , Iโm just surprised as you ๐คI suppose itโs because I needed someone to come up against some other figures I have , if you are to battle you might as well fight Orcs๐๐๐

Great work on the Orcs Pat, I think the skin tone looks great, and have seen all sorts of tones over the years even blue and purple ( competition painters) that looked great

Orcs are orcs. There really isnโt a โstandardโ skin color. Many stories and games systems have as many green as any other color. Glad to see you deviated front he GW standard pattern Orc!

Cheers mate , thatโs great to hear ! Thatโs the general consensus , I felt green , blue or even red was for me ๐ณso I went with Tolkien as advised by the daughters ๐๐ค

Regarding Tolkien, are actually correct as to the color scheme with the grayish tones. If you want to follow the 70s DnD canon, they could also have been brownish. Hell, goblins were orange skinned in DND. I remember those days before GW Uber marketing success. Found this interesting thread that mentioned that the green skin concepts may have come partiallly from the influences of some artistsโ paintings and some from the concept of Spider-Manโs nemesis the Green Goblin. https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/170556/when-and-why-did-orcs-go-green. In ant case I love how this is โsmallโ in your eyes and looking awesome already. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Thanks Mark I feel there is going to be a fair bit of variety by the time I have finished, but definitely no green ๐ ๐ ๐ !

I have just checked out the link mate and it was very interesting, food for thought , there might be more variations to come ๐คmaybe a hint of green but no vibrant ones ๐๐ค

These look great, Pat! I would have never guessed you were going to dip into Lord of the Rings next. That used to be all that I painted and played in wargaming not so long ago so I’m excited to see what you have up your sleeves here. I might have to follow through on that GoFundMe account to get you a shed if it means that you’ll make more dioramas like this! ๐

Thanks mate , the GoFund sounds great but knowing the daughter she will want us to build it , a carryover from building her Tiny Home ๐ก. If you had said to me two years ago that I would end up doing this new stuff I would have said , no never , not my thing . Funny how things can change eh!๐ฒI feel itโs the greater variety of painting Fantasy that pleases me the most ๐.

Haha, that could be a downside to a new shed! Historical subjects are great but they can limit your creativity or freedom a bit. Nothing wrong with them of course as historicals can be very interesting to work on but going outside of those restrictions is really nice too I find. Glad that you’re enjoying it and I’m looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks mate i do a few plans for the historical ones which I think I will ease back into after the Orcs are done. I have purchased so musketeers to do, not sure how that stands with historical but its going in the right direction i think!
