I was talking to a long-term friend about my dioramas, and he asked how I decided the subject for one. I replied it was generally seeing a painting or a photo or even someone elseโs interesting work. Then it came to me that nostalgia played a bigger part than I thought. I started making simple oneโs way back as a kid when Airfix was the only one, I knew about. Because there were no others to compare them with, we thought they were ace.
Being a hoarder, I still have a plenty of figures from my youth, and every so often I would rummage through the containers to add an old one to a new diorama for a laugh. Not so funny when the nostalgia bug bites, and you end up buying a new box of the old Airfix ๐.
Well, here is a result of that madness!!! The Old American War of Independence from Airfix that you older guys will remember. I thought they were the antsโ pants when I was a kid, so here we are with the guy in uniform running past the one in the brown coat, being around fifty-eight years old. ๐ ๐

Great dio Pat, and probably a good thing to scratch that nostalgia itch before it gets too big ! LOL

Pat you have taken me back to that time as well – I did a half decent job on my AWI airfix chaps. They all went to plastic heaven when I left the hobby in 1980. Somehow I preferred the AWI to the Napoleonic airfix despite some poor figure choices for gaming – like the carrying injured trio – great fit a diorama of course. Happy memories ๐

Thanks matey, I have to agree with you on the poor job Airfix did on the Napoleonic sets, particularly the Brits. Itโs funny how you mentioned the injured guy trio as I slipped these guys in to one of the first dioramas I did back in 2013 I think, the 95th rifles one.
If memory serves me well I think they were taking him into a shed๐ค, I think I would have had to repaint it as 50 odd years back I would have been using paint out of my dads shed๐๐.

Don’t know much about these Airfix boxes as they weren’t available for me. So nice piece of work. If working on it summonend this feeling about these good old days then it has done all its magic.

Looking great, Pat! I don’t know the boxes but the top photo really does have that “box art” look to the framing and the layout of all the figures.
